As a result of a bond issue on the 2004 ballot, Lakewood has received over 35 million USD to construct a new school building. Construction began in January 2006, and continued until the summer of 2007. The new building had its official opening over the summer of 2007, with students sometimes assisting teachers move into the new building post term-end. The new building was open for use by the student body and faculty starting at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. The new building features a large atrium with three large, indoor potted trees.
Lakewood has both honors and Advanced Placement programs for more advanced students. Lakewood is one of two International Baccalaureate Secondary schools in the Jefferson County School District. The other is Standley Lake High School.
Lakewood has been featured twice in 5280 Magazine, once in the August 2007 issue and again in the September 2008 issue. In August 2007, Lakewood tied Regis High School for 9th place in the category: "Denver's Best High Schools". It was also again featured in September 2008.
The Lakewood High School instrumental music program includes the Bengal Regiment (marching band), symphonic and concert bands, symphonic and concert orchestra, winter percussion ensemble, winter guard, and at least one jazz ensemble. Students may also audition for pit orchestra in support of the school’s drama program. Starting in the 2011 to 2012 school year, Lakewood will have a new chamber orchestra, and a new wind ensemble band.
The Bengal Regiment has ranked within the top ten bands in Colorado class 5A competition since entering that division in 2005, including a fifth place showing in 2008.[2] In January 2006 the orchestra was invited to perform at the Colorado Music Educators’ Association (CMEA) annual conference, and again in 2011, with the symphonic orchestra.
The Winter Percussion Ensemble competes in the RMPA circuit in the Percussion Scholastic Open class.
In November 2011, Barrage will come to play with the orchestra for 2 days.
In addition to the Lakewood instrumental program, Lakewood High School has a total of five choirs (three auditioned, two unauditioned). The two unauditioned choirs are the Y-Chromophones, a men's ensemble, and Women's Voices, a women's ensemble. The three auditioned choirs, Eclipse, a jazz ensemble group consisting of 12 female voices, Encore, a mixed ensemble group, and Kaleidoscope, a female ensemble group, have been recognized as "The Top Choirs in Colorado". In January 2010, Encore had the honor of attending the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA)convention. Encore also attended a statewide choral competition in Grand Junction, CO in April 2010, taking 1st place in the mixed choir category. In previous years, Kaleidoscope has also attended the CMEA conference, most recently in 2011. The Lakewood Choral department has shown significant growth over the last few years, despite budget cuts.
